380 students currently study plumbing, 19 of them are women.

In 1990 the first woman completed a journeyman’s exam in plumbing. 1407 people in total have completed the exam, 9 of them are women.

Auto mechanics

168 men are currently enrolled in studies in auto mechanics in Borgarholtsskóli and VMA (Akureyri Comprehensive College), but only 43 women.

2486 people have completed a journeyman’s exam in auto mechanics in Iceland, 31 of them are women.

Programming

There are 303 students in the Computer Study Programme in Tækniskólinn (Technical College Reykjavik) and Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurnesja (Suðurnes Comprehensive College), the emphasis is on programming and computer science.

36 of the students are girls.

Marine engineering

In the years 1916 to 2025, 3010 men graduated with a diploma in the highest level of marine engineering studies from the Marine Engineering College, which is Tækniskólinn (Technical College Reykjavik) today. Only 20 women have graduated with the same diploma.

The first woman to become a marine engineer attended the school in 1974, in that year the law was changed in Iceland, giving women the right to attend studies in marine engineering. Previously women were not allowed to study marine engineering.

A few women had worked as unskilled marine engineers before this, but for lower pay than skilled workers.

38 students are registered in the audio engineering programme run jointly by Technical College and Studio Syrland. 4 of them are women.

Many Icelandic women have held the position of foreman on ships through the ages and a few have been registered as captains of large ships. It wasn’t until the eighties that the first woman completed an education in navigation and today 15 women have completed studies at the School of Navigation.
